When it comes to politicians who are actually dangerous, one name near the top of the list is Texas’ Tom DeLay. The man described as the most powerful member of the Congress by some, has pushed his ultra religious mandate at every turn to the point of blaming Columbine massacre on students being thought the theory of evolution. Hid “biblical worldview” (as he calls it) is the kind that pushes him to support Israel at every turn so Christ can return to the scene promised in that book without mentioning that all its Jewish residents who do not convert before such event are going to be doomed to a miserable existence. He also calls Environmental Protection Agency, the “Gestapo”. Just a nice guy all around.

But now the House Ethics Committee and a Grand Jury in Texas have him under investigation for perhaps his most dangerous exploits; laundering corporate influence through the system. But the story doesn’t end there. As Howard Dean recently wrote “Four of the five Republicans on the House Ethics Committee, which will review the charges against DeLay next month, have received over $35,000 from an arm of the DeLay operation. They are in no position to conduct an independent investigation. The examination of Tom DeLay’s political money machine should be free from the influence of that machine. That can only happen with an independent, outside counsel leading the probe.”

And “The House Ethics Committee must appoint an outside counsel to lead the investigation. Add your name to the call for accountability:

Hey, Susan Sheybani must be proud. Perhaps her British comrades have been listening and found a way for the “Third Way” Blair to get re-elected again. There are no problems here, everything is just pefect in Great ol’ Britain.

I don’t really care if NPR critic actually likes the new “reality TV” foolishness; Amish in the City, even if Kevan is “from a small family with a Persian-Muslim father and American-Presbyterian mother.” I just think the whole genre has reached a ridiculous stage were soon they’ll have cameras in every one of our work cubicles and start offending all beliefs and backgrounds, just to get some rating. Stop the madness I say, before its too late.

Despite my serious reservations with the cult of Rajavi, I would never wish for their rank and file members and supporters to be handed over to Iran. Having said that, I think the inconsistent policy of this U.S. administration towards people and groups it considers “terrorists”, is yet another wrong step towards making this world a less-safe place and proves once again that labels such as democracy, freedom, fighting tyranny and war on terror are just facades put on an old strategy of world-dominance for profit and influence. What a shame.

    Dear Pedram-

You are so cynical! World-dominace for profit and influence certainly is a factor in the actions of nations. There may be some industrialized nations that don’t want to increase their “profits and influence”, but I can’t think of any off-hand.

People like to slam the USA as an imperial power, and in some ways it tries to be. But this country has not been in a war for territory for over one-hundred years. The USA is not paid tribute by any other country, in fact, they pay handsomely for the military bases they have set up in foreign countries, and for natural resources, like oil. The USA left Germany and Japan as independent sovereign entities after conquering them in WWII. Do you think those countries want to increase their profits and influence?

Many Americans, including people in the government, have the dumbbell notion that everyone would be better off, and have more profits and influence, if they embraced democracy and free market systems. This is a laughable notion to many, but I think the Americans mainly want to be able to sell their junk anywhere they want. War and terrorism is bad for business; that’s the main impetus for trying to stamp it out. American culture is what is in the process of dominating the world, but if you don’t like Britney Spears, don’t buy her music.

  4. I think WWII/Korea/Vietnam were wars for territory. The territory up for grabs was the entire SE Asian theater. Or were we just trying to spread Freedom and Democracy to the people of Japan, et al?

  5. Dear Evan-

Why don’t you go to Google and find out who declared war on whom? You will find that Japan and Germany declared war on the USA first. The USA was attacked by Japan (you may recall Pearl Harbor). Regarding Germany, Roosevelt believed the USA should get involved in the European war, but there was no concensus for it in the Congress or among the US population as a whole. Germany had not attacked the USA. In one of the most
bonehead events of WWII, Hitler declared war on the USA a few days after Pearl Harbor.

The purpose of the US involvement in WWII was to destroy the regimes and warmaking capacity of Germany and Japan. Spreading freedom and democracy came after the fact, when the military objectives had been accomplished. It was believed that if Germany and Japan became democratic states, they would become more peaceful world citizens, which is what happened. Democracies generally do not make war on each other.

When people say you cannot install democracy by the point of a bayonet, they have conveniently forgotten about the experience of Japan and Germany.

Vietnam and Korea were cold war stuff. The USA foolishly got involved in civil wars, but I don’t think there was ever an intention that those countries would become colonies of the USA. They were trying to keep the communists out. The UN gave its blessing to the Korea intervention. With the UN okay, preumably even John Kerry would have gone along with the US involvement in the Korean war.

  6. Evan-

While you’re at it, why don’t you refresh my memory on what territories the USA acquired as a result of WWII?

I know they got some islands in the Pacific that were former colonies of the Germans or Japanese. This was under the auspices of the United Nations, where the USA was a “trustee”.

As far as I know, most if not all of those islands are now independent.

I am not aware of ANY territory in Europe that the USA got as a result of the WWII, with the exception of a few military bases. The USA pays the host country big bucks to keep those bases, witness what happened when Bush said he was going to remove troops from Germany and Korea. There was a furor in the German and Korean governments, complaining, in the case of Germany, that the base they were going to close contributed 10 BILLION dollars a year (for goods, services and Germans hired to work on the base) to the local economy, and they didn’t want it closed.

Of course there was lots of land grabs in WWII, but it was Germany, Italy and Russia primarily. The main recipient of new territory was the Soviet Union.

So, if you would be so kind as to tell me what territories the USA took as a result of WWII, I’d appreciate it.
