A few weeks ago while at a lunch meeting in my office, which is on the 27th floor of a downtown Los Angeles building, the lights went off. Now having been in California during the energy crisis, rolling blackouts where a common event. What made this a bit different is that the lights weren’t coming on and only the night before there was a statement by Al-Qaeda about a terrorist attack in Los Angeles. We continued the meeting with a corner light that had come on with the emergency generator, but after hearing the fire trucks sirens for 15 minutes and having in the back of my mind what had been broadcasted over the news I decided to excuse myself and call Pedram. I wanted to make sure he was ok and see if he had any information. In the end it turned out to be noting but a mishap of some electrical workers and the power came back on in about an hour. The effect of this event along with Katrina and Rita for us has been an awareness of being in an emergency state due to either an earthquake or attack. Since then Pedram and I have been talking about having emergency supplies ready both in the car and home. We have even picked a meeting place should we not be able to reach each other by phone. We figure it is always better to be prepared.
