AWOL, AWOL, Apparently AWOL!

For the second time this week, the White House released a stack of documents today to prove W's perfect record while serving in the National Guard and guess what is still missing? Anything pertaining to the months during 1972 when he is suspected to have "disappeared" in Alabama to help in the campaign of a family friend.

I never paid attention to this as to me being a good military man or a bad one is neither an asset or a liability. However, as it relates to someone's credibility, particularly someone claiming a much higher morale standard, this is yet another disgrace and a black eye for an administration that has had very little but embarrassments and transgressions.

Final note from Jay Leno's monologue last night: "I was watching TV last night. I saw an interesting documentary on the Ninja, the Japanese soldier. According to legend the Ninjas were warriors who could make themselves invisible whenever there was a war. Kind of like Bush and the National Guard."

Isn't that the sign of a good leader and coward to convince others to lay down their lives when they themselves would never do such a thing?

When your in the National Guard, as I was for four years during Desert Storm, You are allowed to move. Unless you are infomred your activation is iminent, you are allowed to move about the country. So if you take a job in another state, say, Alabama. You are allowed to go. If they cannot find another guard unit to take you on, your simply discharged. Often times when moving, you miss several Guard meetings. In order to have a 'good year' you must have a prescribed number of weekends in that year. So if you move it is not uncommon to have down time, followed by 'making up' drills.

When you go off to grad school, as I did when I was in the guard, it is commmon to simply seek a discharge, exactly as I did.

So what Bush did, 1) move , 2) make up drills, 3) obtain a discharge to go to grad school; Is neither uncommon, nor is it illegal in any way. It is a very common part of National Guard Life.

If you went to my old unit you could probably find numerous enlisted people who would remember me as the college boy who missed drills, and got an early discharge to attend grad school. If I were running for president that could be spun.

Now we all know that back then being in the National Guard was a way to stay out of a war, as opposed to my National Guard service during the Gulf War. But listening to these liberals calling Bush AWOL is pretty funny, and ALL LIES!

Thank you for your enlighting comments. I agree whole heartedly. What Bush did was not special treatment, illegal, or uncommon. I was a flyer on active duty. It is not completely uncommon for active pilots who are out of the cockpit and performing staff work to miss flight physicals. So the issue of Bush not getting a flight physical is bogus as well.
The only part of your comment I would slightly disagree is the contention that the Guard was a way to avoid Viet Nam. Well, if you are a Guard fighter pilot that is not necessarily the truth. the F-102 (Bush's aircraft) was an interceptor and was not used in VN. Had he flown the F-105, he would most definitely seen action in VN. Before anyone says he could have gone to a unit that flew F-105's, he went to his local guard unit as most guardsmen do. It just so happens Bush's unit flew F-102s.
As to the charge of coward, was FDR a coward? More recently was Clinton a coward? He used the military and men and women died in Bosnia and Kosovo (I know what my answer would be about Clinton). In the end Bush served honorably and this is really a non-issue.

I SUGGEST PEOPLE WHO ALLOW THEMSELVES TO BE (AND)STAY ENSLAVED SUCH AS YOU IN IRAN NOT SAY THE CRAP YOU AND YOUR CO-HORTS ARE SPEWING ABOUT PRESIDENT BUSH AS HE DOES NOT TALK THE TALK ( LIKE YOU AND OTHERS LIKE YOU) BUT HE WALKS THE WALK!!! HE IS A TEXAN WITH THE BALLS OF A TEXAN!!

Posted by: gary at February 19, 2004 05:34 PM

Gary,

Come on man! First of all Bush is from Connecticut. Second if he had these alleged giant TEXAN balls why the fuck did he not attack North fucking Korea. Yeah you know the country that announced that they had WMDs and the missiles to hit the West Coast. Instead he attacks another coward in a poor impoverished country.
And since you're so close to big "W" tell him that he is representing the USA and stop being such a pussy and stop taking orders from Sharon.

I don't know too many "Texans" that get bitched around by a fat jew with a womans name!!

I'm out

ACH,

Your out, all right.....right out of reality. Attacking N. Korea right in between China and S. Korea would be suicidal for millions. Dude , if you have no more grasp of the world than this, don't embarass yourself by posting. The use of initials only doesn't hide your stupidity and obvious lack of grasp for world affairs.

N. Korea would not have the technology to do what it has done were it not for the incredible naivete of ther Clinton administration and Jimma!!!

Nice post Bill. I agree completely. North Korea already said they would launch missiles at Seoul, South Korea in the event of an attack. That would be a disaster. And yes, Clinton did sell our missile technology to China.

Bush taking orders from Sharon? LOL, get a clue man. And Bush moved to Texas when he was 2 years old. I think it's safe to say he's a TEXAN.

AWOL? What a joke. He received an honorable discharge. It's not like he fled the country like the draft-dodgin' Clinton.

In case some of you aren't aware, it is impossible for Guardsmen to be Absent With Out Leave (AWOL). Guardsmen can not request, nor can their superiors grant leave, ergo they can not be AWOL. Those who accuse Bush of being AWOL are guilty of misusing a loaded term for no other reason than to impugn his character. That's fine -- both sides are going to engage in that sort of crap-fest -- but they'd do well to be less sloppy whilst slinging thier feces. I don't know what happened to Bush during those months in 72, but I do know that he was honorably discharged from the Guard. The accusers shoulder the burden of proof here, not Bush.

You idiots who support the Bush admin. are brainwashed by the media and his administration's rhetoric. Saddam was not a danger to the US, had no links to al qaeda. We went there because we needed a secure supply of oil, and for Israel's sake. How can you imbeciles still support the war, when no WMD's were found, OUR ENTIRE PRETEXT FOR GOING TO WAR IN THE FIRST PLACE. Damn you guys are ignorant!
