Hossein Derakhshan, MP?
As someone who has also ran for office before, let me start by telling you what I think are the different types of people who actually put their names up for an election of this type. I divide them in 6 distinct categories:
- Those who only run to make a statement or take a stand and don't care if they are elected (or are even allowed to run as is the case here).- Those who run for the publicity it generates, for a future project.
- Those who want to get elected to use the celebrity for other uses.
- Those who want the power being elected brings.
- Those who want the money or position associated with the office.
- Those who want to get elected to push forward an agenda.
Considering what I know of Hossein, I'm guessing he is of the first group, as I was. But there are some key differences and they are the reasons I could never do as he is. Take the following for example:
Like it or not, even applying to be considered, carries a certain baggage with it. By applying, you acknowledge at least two things: 1) This regime is legitimate. I think it is fair to believe the Islamic Republic is certainly not a Republic and there are serious questions about it being Islamic too. Also, as most important positions are held by unelected individuals who are not subject to public scrutiny and accountability, they are not the legitimate representatives of Iranian people and can't stand for the nation. In short, illegitimate to the bone. 2) Consider the election process to be justified and legal. Hey, even the "moderate" President says only those who agree with the regime have the right to be in the parliament (Farsi link courtesy of ZaneIrani blog). When the process is so flawed that only a small fraction of population is even allowed to run, participating in the charade only adds to the credibility of a fraud.
For those two reasons alone, I believe Hossein is making a mistake but still like do acknowledge that his running or the possible rejection of his candidacy, will certainly provide a podium for him to raise some important issues and I hope he is clever enough to use that to its maximum potential.

Hoder's decision and your argument is a typical example of the difference between exapts who have lived for a long time from Iran and those who still have short term impressions or still live with it.
It is easy for those who live in safe places to call the Iranian illiegitimate. But those who have to live through the ramifications of the Iranian government, its legitimacy is beside the point. THAT IS REALITY to them. They have to go through its social, economical, cultural consequences. Sometimes they have to get involved in the way things are run to make sure certain things are preserved or at least less damaged.
If you ask a nation to step away from its own politics, you better tell them go and die too. How else can they voice their opinion? Or have an impact? ANY KIND OF IMPACT if you're alive?
By asking help from those can be influential? You reject that outright too! By forming cohesive resistance movements?

We don't live in 19th century Europe or 1917 Russia. Communications are much faster and methods of influence are much readily available to those like it.

Also, consider what he has written in http://freethoughts.org as well as his Persian blog about Larijani and the techno-conservatives.
WhoMan makes some valid points, aside from coming across as a bit too angry. However, I think Pedram is correct and sooner or later, expat or not, born before revolution or after, we all need to realize this "reality" does not have to be and any political move needs to be careful to not add to the legitimacy or credibility of this regime.

It is always easiest to sit outside the "gowd" and say "lengesh kon" (as I'm doing right now). Personally, I cannot take such a line against many of the people who are even in positions of power right now in Iran (including Khatami, for whom I voted twice, and even some people in the "conservative" camp). At least they're doing something, and many of them have been paying a heavy price for it. In my opinion, the fact that they may compromise over many issues or appear to support matters that are clearly unjust does not necessarily undermine the value of their work. This is a real society in a real world with real problems, which will have to be dealt with realistically. Anyone who is not willing to appreciate that, in my opinion, is probably better off sitting in a tree far far away from the reality of things and pontificating about what Heaven should look like.

Everyone chooses their battle accordingly. Hoder wants to do it his way, Pedram believes that's wrong and chooses a different path. Does not mean he is not doing anything (lengesh kon).
I personally agree that trying to fight the system from within, has failed miserably in Iran. This was Tudeh Party's philosophy and many of the so called Reformers also come from that mindset.
Let's accept its failure and move on.

It's quie easy to say oh I don't like this system I am not going to play it's a totally different thing to actually do something about it inside Iran.
That's one reason I've never really belived in the expat community outside of Iran, if you didn't live in Iran after the revolution, you didn't serve in the army and defend Iran against Iraq, basically lived your life in the outside for the past 20 years what entitles you to have a say in the current govt ? Probably one reason I repect Pedram more than most of the other people who talk about politics is that he's paid a price in the past and I think that entitles him to something more.
To criticize or voice your opinion you do not need a qualification letter:
Religion must find its proper place in the society as a system of beliefs that is practiced freely by individuals.
The odds that our nation suddenly discovers a new magical recipe that contradicts thousands of human experience is, realistically, slim to none. I remember that Ayatollah Khomeini also spoke seven languages fluently, wrote world class poetry, and had occasional trips to the moon and more than anything else people had a lot of respect for the man on the moon! ...and to criticize or voice your opinion you do not need a qualification letter.
Of course not, anyone can voice their opinions on any subject without any qualification whatsoever. My point was that talking about something is a lot easier than doing it and the two are not equal. One might hold an opinion that the moon is made of cheese and one would be welcomed to it, but that wouldn't have any effect in the real world.

You write about the 'moon being made of cheese and one would be welcomed to it' as if it did not happen in the current history of Iran. Thousands and thousands of Iranians saw Ayatollah Khomaini’s face on the moon. This historical event happened in the real world with an effect on the real lives of the real people.
