Long before XTC was another name for those funky looking pills some of us may have experimented with, there was a band by that name. XTC is perhaps one of the least appreciated but most talented musical groups of the last few decades and here's one of my favorite XTC songs:

Dear god, hope you get the letter and...
I pray you can make it better down here
I don't mean a big reduction in the price of beer
But all the people that you made in your image
See them starving on their feet
'Cause they don't get enough to eat from god
I can't believe in you
Dear god, sorry to disturb you but...
I feel that I should be heard loud and clear
We all need a big reduction in amount of tears
And all the people that you made in your image
See them fighting in the street
'Cause they can't make opinions meet about god
I can't believe in you
Did you make disease and the diamond blue?
Did you make mankind after we made you?
And the devil too!
Dear god don't know if you noticed but...
Your name is on a lot of quotes in this book
Us crazy humans wrote it, you should take a look
And all the people that you made in your image
still believing that junk is true
Well I know it ain't, and so do you
Dear god
I can't believe in
I don't believe
I won't believe in heaven or hell
No saints, no sinners, no devil as well
No pearly gates, no thorny crown
You're always letting us humans down
The wars you bring, the babes you drown
Those lost at sea and never found
And it's the same the whole world 'round
The hurt I see helps to compound
That father, son and holy ghost
Is just somebody's unholy hoax
And if you're up there you'll perceive
That my heart's here upon my sleeve
If there's one thing I don't believe in
It's you
Dear god
I love this song. Its similar to Imagine by John Lennon.
Posted by: A.H. at December 2, 2003 11:48 AMThe beauty of XTC's songs is that so many of the ones written by Andy Partridge are as powerful as this. Case in point, "Books Are Burning" on their "Nonsuch" album. I haven't listened to this song in quite awhile. Despite owning "Skylarking" (a brilliant album by the way) but I found in reading the lyrics this evening that its message is particularly compelling in light of ongoing world events.
Good post Pedram :)
Posted by: Kristen at December 2, 2003 09:57 PMHow dare you compare this song to Imagine?
As for my comments on the song...
The song starts off well. It has a dragging feel, like a knife being pulled through dirty skin. It works very well for that part of the song. It subtly changes, then, when the violin and piano comes in, making it slightly more soulful.
Then, it just gets boring.
The next good part is "If there's one thing I don't believe in, it's you."
But yeah, I don't particularly like this song for its musical style or its lyrics, and since that's all this song has, I don't like this song.
Posted by: Alex Moon at January 9, 2004 09:08 PMthe young voice at the start is moving but the song goes downhill when the male voice comes in (note: i have no prior knowledge of xtc so i am unable to give you names) that voice is beautiful and the male voice is harsh compared to it. The lyrics are beautiful too.
Posted by: Hannah at April 16, 2004 05:14 AMfunny how the song seems ironic. why speak to something you don't believe is there. i think the song speaks about a human spirit longing to believe in a higher power, but is unwilling.
i love xtc, and have for many, many years.
Metaphysics is the finding of bad reasons for what we believe upon instinct, but to find these reasons is no less an instinct.
Posted by: penis enlargement at September 7, 2004 04:07 PMI got to this song through the version on Tricky's album Vulnerable. Loved the lyrics and, then got to this post. I actually like the Tricky version better, but that's just my taste..

It sounds like it's written from the point of view of someone who grew up with religion and church, and has just come to realize that none of it is true. The world needs more songs like this.
