Academic Petition

The Graduate Employees and Students Organization at Yale University, with the endorsement of a number of national labor and student advocacy groups, has created an online petition on behalf of international students whose visas are being delayed and denied due to new INS rules created post-9/11. The petition states perceived difficulties in working and studying and calls on the Bush administration to make changes to ease these difficulties.

They're working on it. But some terrorists and their state sponsors still appear to be alive, so don't expect much on the visa front in the short term.

I have to say I think very little of online petitions. IMO no one takes them seriously, if you really want to make a difference write a letter or fax something.

Online petitions may have little result in changing the minds of those who are addressed by them, but based on the widespread usage of the internet, they are a great tool to reach a vast number of people and give a higher profile to an issue.

This petition is no different in that "W" will not care if 2 million people sign it, but even if 2000 people sign it, it has reached some of the people who would normally not care about the topic or be unaware of how it has derailed so many lives.
