Wouldn't it be nice if someone in Toronto or Ontario or Canada in general had enough sense and leadership ability to stand up against the nonsense of racial biases resulted from the SARS epidemic in Toronto? Wouldn't it be cool to have a progressive Mayor, Premier or Prime Minister to stand up and be the flag-bearer when the community needs it? Is that just too much to ask from one of the most diverse, liberal (ideology, not the party), freethinking countries in the world? Will somebody please stand up?
Where have u been Pedram? The PM dined at a Chinese restaurant, just couple of days ago, to brush off the whole Asian mistrust thingy.
Posted by: siroos at April 23, 2003 04:23 AMD'oh. I just wanted to make the same comment. But despite that, the racial biases are strongly in place. Ironically I have seen a strong bias among the same racial group who since two years started to complain about racial profiling becuase of their country of birth. I think that's sad. A white man can be equally a concern as a second generation Chinese.
Posted by: Hooman at April 23, 2003 06:30 AMI'm glad the PM is enjoying some Dim Sum (Toronto has the best, only second to Hong Kong, IMHO). However, as the growing number of incidents and reports of discrimination and biased attitudes and conducts shows, much more needs to be done. Hope he (as well as other like Mel) can muster enough leadership ability to actually lead for a change.
